We are one of the world’s leading manufacturers for commercial vehicle tyres. In our plants throughout the world, we produce tyres for a variety of applications, characterised by different vehicles, road conditions and customer requirements as well as driver behaviour.
Our product portfolio comprises truck and bus tyres as well as commercial specialty tyres. The business unit is developing from a mere tyre manufacturer to a solutions provider, also offering services and solutions such as the ContiLifeCycle™, ContiPressureCheck™ and Conti360°, which help our customers to optimise their business.
We are one of the leading manufacturers of passenger and light truck tyres (PLT) in Europe and the world's fourth largest passenger tyre manufacturer in the original equipment and replacement market. Founded in Hanover, Germany, in 1871, we are now one of the world’s leading automotive suppliers. With our products and services, we contribute to safe, economical and ecologically efficient mobility.
The Passenger and Light Truck Tyres Division consists of the Continental, Uniroyal, Semperit, Barum and General Tire brands. Continental, our premium brand, enjoys a leading position in the original equipment and replacement business.
Being a brand with heritage, we have vast knowledge and expertise, making us one of the world’s leading premium tyre manufacturers and suppliers to the automobile industry. Our years of extensive research and testing have shown that tyres are not only crucial for a vehicle’s overall performance, but they greatly influence braking as well. That is why we never stop optimising our product range, making sure our tyres always offer excellent braking, maximum safety and driving pleasure.
To achieve this, we put our tyres to the test on our proving grounds around the globe, including the Contidrom, our in-house track near Hanover. Within the Contidrom, in the first fully automated tyre-testing system, AIBA, tests can be conducted all year-round on wet and dry road surfaces. While we are developing and testing our premium tyres, we consider each and every safety and performance aspect. This is repeatedly confirmed in independent tests around the world, where we have achieved the highest recommendation several times. Our tyres also have to pass hundreds of vehicle manufacturers’ stringent tests to ensure they perform to the highest standards. Only then are our tyres approved as original equipment. The result is that almost one in three vehicles in Europe leaves the production line with our tyres.
More than 100 years of experience in the development and production of bicycle tyres has made us a unique company within the industry.
In our technology and development centre in Korbach, we are constantly developing revolutionary new technologies such as the unbeatable Black Chili compound and the ultimate Vectran™ breaker anti-puncture technology, both used at the pinnacle of the sport.
These technologies demand sophisticated processes to ensure our legendary end-product quality, and these innovations - as well as the ProTection and RaceSport technology for MTB tyres, - can only be manufactured in our factory in Germany.
In order to offer the best tyre for any application, we rely equally on dialogue with our professional racers, hobby cyclists and everyday bike riders.
As a global player, we also maintain high-tech production facilities outside of Germany, where our tyres are produced for you with an equal degree of care and dedication. One thing all of our bicycle tyres have in common is that they are developed in the technology centre in Korbach, Germany, where they all undergo strict inspection.
Our heart and soul is behind the phrase “Handmade in Germany”, with all of our products and technologies.
It takes a pioneering spirit, an unfailing instinct and an obsession with technology to even think of establishing a rubber and gutta-percha company in 1871 – the year the German Reich was founded. At the start, bicycles and solid tyres were the only product lines manufactured at our home plant in Hanover. Close to a quarter of a century was to pass before Hildebrand & Wolfmüller came up with the first serial fuel-powered motorcycle in 1894. And despite a prancing horse still in the logo of the young Continental, we were a driving force in the tyre market right from the very beginning, playing a pivotal role in the technological progress being made. As far back as 1892, we were the first German company to manufacture a pneumatic tyre and, in 1904, we marketed the first tyres with a patterned tread – a sensation in those times. But from that point on, the tempo picked up considerably. The motorisation of society in the early 20th century prompted the development of the German tyre culture in its purest form: we relentlessly researched, tested and invented motorcycle tyres, covering hundreds of thousands of kilometres and applying for numerous patents. In fiercely contested racing events, we got to know our weaknesses the hard way – but also came to realise what we were good at. Daring riders like the world record holder Wilhelm Herz, who cracked the 300 km/h mark in 1951 with an NSU Delfin, have immortalised our brand name.
Today, we are carrying forward these traditions in our home plant for motorcycle tyres in the North Hessian town of Korbach – with the same passion that marked previous generations. We literally live the German art of engineering and carry on the age-old obsession with “epoch-making“ innovations.
We develop intelligent technologies for transporting people and their goods. As a reliable partner, the international automotive supplier, tyre manufacturer, and industrial partner provides sustainable, safe, comfortable, individual, and affordable solutions.
