Summer, Winter and All-Season tyres

When do I need summer tyres, winter tyres or all season tyres?

Continental strongly recommends using the appropriate tyre for each season. That means driving on summer tyres during the warmer months and on winter tyres during the colder seasons. Such tyres feature different rubber compounds, tread grooves and widths to suit different weather conditions. The marked differences between summer and winter tyres provide the best balance of safety and economy year-round.

All-season tyres cannot provide optimal performance year-round under all conditions.

The rule of thumb: summer tyres should be fitted to your car for the period between Easter and October.

When do you need summer tyres?
Summer

During the warmer weather period, when temperatures rise above 7°C, we strongly recommend fitting summer tyres. Only they can guarantee high-grip traction on wet and dry roads through their special tread patterns and compounds. They also provide high driving stability on corners and optimum mileage performance at summer temperatures.

As winter approaches, drivers should start planning for whatever the weather may throw at them. If you need convincing, listen to the weather forecasts. They will predict a mix of snow, ice, rain and dry spells. To cope with the resulting mix of road conditions, winter tyres are strongly recommended.

When winter is approaching and temperatures drop below 7°C, give your summer tyres a rest. The roads will be cold, wet and slippery. Rubber reacts to changes in temperature and braking is different on icy, slushy or wet road surfaces. Winter tyres offer much better grip in these cold weather conditions than summer tyres. For optimal performance and safety, it’s a good idea to change to winter tyres from Continental before the start of the season.

What are the advantages of wide winter tyres?

Whether driving on dry or wet roads or over compacted snow, wide winter tyres offer significant advantages over standard-width winter tyres. Wide winter tyres improve safety due to better driving characteristics such as braking, traction, and grip. When looking to purchase your new tyres, remember to consider tyre size in your purchase.

Continental recommends: winter tyres that are at least the same width as, or wider than, your summer fitment.

What about all-season tyres?

Although all-weather tyres – or all-season tyres – are available, we strongly recommend using the appropriate tyre for each season. Fit your wheels with summer tyres for spring and summer, and with winter tyres for autumn and winter. This will maximise your motoring safety, economy and efficiency. Season-specific tyres are fitted with certain specifications that make them superior: tyre compound, tread and groove.
