Tips and tricks to help you prepare

Whether it's your first Conti Thunder Run, or you're looking to make a second year comeback, we've got you covered with some handy tips on how to best prepare for the chance to be on the winning team!

Tips to help ensure your teammate turns up for the handover at 2am

  • Write down the schedule and make sure everyone is happy with their running slot.
  • Make sure everyone gets woken up on time. Runner 1 wakes up runner 3, runner 2 wakes up runner 4, and so on. This gives everyone 30-90 minutes to get ready.
  • Be sure that all participants roughly knows how long the runner before them will take to complete a lap.
  • Have another runner or helper walk with you to the transition area. This is useful if you forget something, or have clothes to ditch before you get on the course.
  • Have a special call to shout out or object to to wave to make it easier to spot your teammates. Remember, at 2am, staring into head torches, everyone looks the same!

How to survive your first 24 hour race

  • Pack plenty of clothes. TR24 can be baking hot, very wet, and everything in between!
  • Ensure you have sufficient food and drink with you.
  • Bring some cash for the onsite catering, and other stalls.
  • Run within your limits.
  • Have fun, and try not to get worked up if things don't go to plan.
  • Bring baby wipes!

Tips for the brave solo runners #1

  • Get enough sleep before the race. Tapering doesn't mean doing all those DIY jobs at home in your spare time.
  • Plan your meals and nutrition strategy in advance.
  • If you have a support crew, inform them of everything that you need them to do, and when. It's important that they manage to fit some sleep in – even if you don't.
  • Don't start too fast!
  • Talk to your fellow runners. It will help the time fly by, and it's amazing how much you can learn while out on a run.

Tips for the brave solo runners #2

  • Tent – it's a long night without one!
  • Baby wipes – so, so useful.
  • Insect repellent – the little critters can be quite vicious at this time of year.
  • Dryrobe – keeping warm and dry before and after your laps has such a beneficial effect
  • Multiple shoe option – conditions can be changeable, so having different soles can be key.
