We are proud to be a partner of Vélo Birmingham & Midlands 2019. This year’s cycling events takes place on Sunday 12 May, and will be bigger and better than ever!

The (sold out) main event is an epic new 100 miles closed road route that will take 17,000 riders on an unforgettable journey through the West Midlands, including two major city centres. 2019 also sees the introduction of a new 42 miles event.

Vélo Birmingham & Midlands 100 Miles Route

 

Get ready for an unforgettable 100 mile adventure on completely closed roads.

Starting and finishing in the heart of Birmingham City Centre, the new and improved 100 mile fully closed road route will take 17,000 riders on a truly unforgettable tour of the Midlands.

Riders will encounter stunning countryside, panoramic views, picturesque villages and iconic climbs… not to mention the tens of thousands of residents lining the streets to cheer the riders on!

A major highlight of the 2019 route comes around mile 40 when riders will pass right through the heart of Coventry – UK City of Culture 2021. Cycling on the cobbled streets of the historic Coventry Cathedral in front of thousands of supporters will be a truly unique experience and will make you feel as though you’re riding in the pro peloton!

With c.1,500m of climbing, the route is fairly undulating with a few climbs to navigate on the day, but with the right training and a can-do attitude, this is a challenge that anyone will be able to complete!

Vélo Birmingham & Midlands 2018 event

0 - 25 miles

The Birmingham Bull Ring, will be the backdrop for the 2019 Vélo Birmingham and Midlands venue, with the start line located in Digbeth on High Street Bordesley. Upon crossing the start line, riders will exit the city centre of Birmingham via the A45, enabling them to get in a group right from the off and find a comfortable pace as they settle into the ride. Riding out through the suburbs of Birmingham, riders will quickly pass through Solihull towards Warwickshire where they will get their first taste of the stunning countryside that characterises so much of the route.

25 - 50 miles

Despite the absence of any major climbs on the route, it’s relatively undulating and between miles 25-35 riders will continue to pass through beautiful country roads en-route to Bedworth and Coventry. A major highlight of the 2019 route comes around mile 40 when riders pass right through the heart of Coventry City Centre – the European City of Sport 2019 and City of Culture 2021. Cycling on the cobbled roads surrounding the historic Coventry Cathedral in front of thousands of supporters will be a truly unique experience and is certain to make every rider feel like a true pro!

50 - 75 miles

At around mile 51 riders will pass through the historic town of Meriden – once regarded as the geographical centre of England – where they will pass the National Cyclists’ Memorial which was built to remember cyclists who died in World War One. From here, riders will continue to enjoy a mix of rural country roads and quaint towns and villages that will be lined with enthusiastic supporters. Keep an eye out for Warwickshire’s Packwood House, a beautiful, timber-framed Tudor manor house and gardens owned by the National Trust since 1941.

75 - 100 miles

This is it – the final push as riders make their way back through the suburbs of Dudley and Sandwell and Birmingham. With Halesowen Velodrome just a stone’s throw away, riders will head back to Birmingham City Centre via the Hagley Road which will enable them to pick up the pace for the all-important sprint finish! Upon crossing the finish line on Sherlock Street, riders will be directed back to the Event Village which is located on Edgbaston Street by the iconic Bullring. Here, you will receive your hard-earned medal before celebrating your amazing achievement with your family and friends.

Event start: Birmingham city centre (Bull Ring)

Do something amazing in 2019 and take on this epic two wheeled challenge from Birmingham to Coventry on traffic-free roads. Riders of all abilities aged 16 years and over are welcome… and road bikes and lycra aren’t compulsory!

The 42 mile route is the perfect introduction to riding in a big closed road cycling event and is a great way to gain confidence in your cycling ability in a welcoming and friendly environment. For many it will act as a stepping stone to one day taking on our 100 mile challenge!

Starting in the heart of Birmingham city centre, the 42-mile route will weave its way through the beautiful West Midlands countryside on route to the heart of Coventry – the European City of Sport 2019 – where you will cross the finish line on University Square in the shadow of the historic Coventry Cathedral.

The safe, high quality event experience is exactly the same as our 100-mile route; the only difference is you don’t have to ride as far! Once you’ve crossed the finish line, you’ll be able to enjoy an afternoon of celebrations in Coventry and re-fuel at the famous Coventry Food Festival.
