Saint-Etienne is the design capital. Surprised? You shouldn't be! Saint-Etienne became the first and, so far, only French city to be included in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in 2010. It is the legacy of its past, of an economic and industrial adventure that has kept the city at the forefront of innovation for more than two centuries. Design remains at the very heart of the city's identity today, thanks in no small measure to its ambitious, inventive spirit.
Design is an everyday reality in Saint-Etienne, practised in small and medium-sized enterprises that have become global leaders in niche markets and industries that use the traditional skills of the Saint-Etienne basin (textiles, optics, mechanics). It can be found on street corners, in the unusual layout of a square or in unique or original street furniture.
It is evident in the digital economy, with the ‘Design Tech’ label awarded by the state in 2015, recognising Saint-Etienne's importance for the digital economy. Every two years, it explodes into life for all to see at the Design Biennial, an international event that combines colloquies, workshops and exhibitions, mixing both economic and creative elements. Saint-Etienne, design capital? It makes complete sense!
