Founded by Greeks from Phocaea in Asia Minor in 600 BC, Marseille is the oldest city in France. Over time, this culturally diverse city has developed a strong identity of its own.
France's second largest city, Marseille has turned its attentions to tourism, attracting some 5 million visitors in 2013, when it was European Capital of Culture, and it has become a holiday destination in its own right.
A port that is open to the world, linking Europe to the Mediterranean, the city founded by the Phocaeans now blends the wealth of its unique heritage with a modern style, making it one of the great European cities.
